Brief History:

The Arizona Africa Society, formerly the AZ State Delegation to the February 2000, National Summit on Africa's Dialogue and Celebration of Africa, is a growing advocacy membership organization that is working to influence policies in the U.S. that will lead to mutually beneficial relationships between the U.S. and Africa. Other international communities in America are strong because they have national organizations in Washington D.C. to monitor legislation which impacts them. National leadership helps them to collectively voice their concerns, thereby helping the U.S. to develop policies that better address the concerns of their international communities. Now that the Africa Society of the National Summit on Africa has taken the initiative to form a national organization for the African Community, we can unite our voices so that Africa's  is heard in Arizona and the US!

We are a diverse, nonpartisan organization that is working to improve US-Africa relations!

Background Information

Brief History of the National Summit on Africa, NSOA : In the Spring of 1998, President Clinton made a 12 day historic visit to Africa. The journey was consequent on a new vision the administration laid out for Africa - closer relationship, mutually beneficial to Africa and America. In the same year, 1996, the NSOA, was established with Leonard H. Robinson, Jr. as the President and CEO. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. The Goals of the National Summit were to:
       a) develop a nationally shared policy plan of action to guide US policies on Africa
       b) educate the American public about Africa and about US-Africa relations
       c) broaden and strengthen the network of Africa's supporters in the US
       d) improve relations between Africa and the US both at the policy level and the grassroots level.

February 2000 Summit: The five day event was the first National summit of the organization. Prior to this there had been regional meetings taking place across the U.S. since 1996. In attendance were the President of US, Bill Clinton, Vice President, Al Gore and many other personalities from his administration, some heads of states from Africa and some dignitaries from organizations. Rev. Leon Sullivan was also in attendance, including 2,300 delegates drawn from the six regional zones representing the 50 states. The 2,300 delegates worked on the five areas of the National Policy Plan of Action for US-Africa relations and these are:

  • Economic Development, Trade, Investment, and Job creation .
  • Democracy and Human Rights
  • Sustainable Development, Quality of Life, and the environment
  • Peace and security
  • Education and Culture
  • At the end of the five days the National Policy Plan was adopted and presented to the President, Bill Clinton.
  • After the Summit:
  • State and National Follow Up Plans
  • National Policy Plan of Action (Distribution and Implementation)
  • Restructuring NSOA National Organization
  • Development of State Affiliates
